About Manimahesh
Manimahesh Lake is a high-altitude lake situated at the foot of the Manimahesh Kailash Peak in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. Located at an altitude of 4,080 meters (13,390 feet), this glacial lake holds immense religious significance for Hindus, especially devotees of Lord Shiva.
The lake is named after Lord Shiva (Mani, meaning jewel, and Mahesh being another name of Lord Shiva). According to Hindu mythology, the Manimahesh Kailash Peak is the abode of Lord Shiva. Every year during the month of August/September, the Manimahesh Yatra takes place, where thousands of pilgrims trek to the lake to take a holy dip in its sacred waters.
